A tensile structure is a lightweight roof built from a stretched fabric membrane. It's held between steel masts and cables, and the load runs through it in tension instead of pressing straight down through columns the way an ordinary roof does. That's the whole trick, really. It's what lets a single curved canopy cover so much ground on so little steel, with hardly any supports getting in the way.

Why does that definition matter? Because it explains everything else. Honestly, the part where experience shows up most is the sequencing. The steel goes up first and gets surveyed before anyone lays a hand on the fabric. Then the membrane is unfolded and lifted into place. Tensioning comes after that, and it has to follow a set order, not wherever the crew happens to start. Last of all comes the waterproof detailing around the edges, the clamp lines and any spot where something pierces the membrane. Rush one of those stages, or jump it, and the bill usually shows up months down the line. Maybe a leak. Maybe a stress point sitting where nothing should be pulling. So yes, the drawings have to be right, but the crew tightening the bolts matters every bit as much.

Picking a Membrane: PVC, PTFE or ETFE

PVC-coated polyester is the everyday choice on most Indian commercial jobs. With a good coating and a lacquer topcoat it gives you dependable years of service for typical commercial work.

PTFE-coated fibreglass sits at the premium end. It's tough stuff, it more or less cleans itself in the rain, and it barely reacts to years of hard UV. It's fire-retardant too. Put all of that together and you can see why it turns up on stadium roofs, airport canopies and the sort of landmark buildings that are supposed to still be standing thirty years from now.

ETFE is the odd one out, a clear film used where you want daylight and a light, open feel, think atriums and courtyards, rather than plain shade.
